11th October 2015
This was the third and final demolition to take place of the Red Road Flats – two previous ones happened in 2012 and 2013. Around 2,500 people had to leave their homes in the exclusion zone. Thousands gathered at various points around the site to witness the dramatic change to Glasgow’s skyline. The demolition took just seconds but once the dust had large parts of two of the blocks remained intact and vertical. Controversial plans to demolish the blocks as part of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony were withdrawn following concerns raised around safety and a petition suggesting such a spectacle was inappropriate. Residents were allowed back into their homes several hours after the remaining six blocks were brought down in a series of controlled explosions at around 15:20.
